From the TMBG collection: It's my Steve Keene Pink Album cover painting. Keene is a Brooklyn artist well known for his extensive series of album cover interpretations and his "assembly-line Picasso" approach to mass production of his work. His technique is to cover the walls with 12" plywood canvases and paint many copies of the same work simultaneously.

Keene has stated, "I want buying my paintings to be like buying a CD: it’s cheap, it's art and it changes your life, but the object has no status. Musicians create something for the moment, something with no boundaries and that kind of expansiveness is what I want to come across in my work."

About twenty years ago I came across Keene himself selling some of his work on eBay, and I was lucky enough to acquire the one TMBG painting that he was offering 🙌

Steve Keene is an extremely prolific artist who is well known for his production-line renderings of record covers. He has made over 300,000 paintings. He had a big show at Chashama in Brooklyn Heights, and a mammoth book of his work was just published by Tractor Beam.

“I just love to work,” he said. He’s a process guy. He’s often compared to Warhol, but Keene feels more in line with Robert Rauschenberg, and with the installation artists of the nineteen-seventies. “They set about to do a series of tasks, and the performance was the art work,” Keene said. When Keene shows his work in a gallery, he often makes arrangements to paint there, too. “My paintings are the residue, or the souvenir, of the performance,” he explained

“I love the idea of doing sixty paintings a day, and finishing them, more than the idea of trying to make one that I think is perfect,” he said. “The whole system is based on trying not to beat myself up.”

On today's episode, I talk to artist Steve Keene. Originally from the DC metro area, Steve wanted to be an artist from an early age, taking off on a path that eventually led him to Yale art school. But it wasn't until his early 30s that he realized what he actually wanted to do as an artist, and since then Steve has become the most prolific American painter of all time, producing more than 300,000 hand-painted works via his studio/chainlink fence cage where he paints more than 50 paintings at a time. Time Magazine even gave him the moniker of the "Assembly-Line Picasso" because of his unique mass-production painting style. In addition to his affordable mass-produced paintings, Steve's also painted the album art for many indie rock bands, including Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, The Silver Jews, as well as many others, and a new book about Steve, produced by photojournalist Daniel Efram, was recently published on Hat and Beard Press!
