I’ve seen the letter from Death Row inmate Ray Jasper on my dashboard a lot today, with many people quoting it as an inspirational piece telling the tale of an innocent man convicted because of the colour of his skin. I’ve read his letter, it’s a convincing and moving read, but I read it differently from some because I heard about it after reading the reply written by Steven Alejandro. Steven Alejandro is the brother of Jaspers victim, and I came across his reply on Facebook surprisingly enough. Not once today have I seen a quote from his letter on my dash, not once today have I seen anyone posting links to it, so I thought I would.

In Alejandros reply he makes it clear that Jasper decided to kill his brother days before the crime took place. Ray Jasper would have you believe he is an innocent man, party to a crime, but certainly not a cold blooded murderer, and yet there was evidence of pre meditation. Ray Jasper admits to slicing open the neck of David Alejandro, and yet, because the ME revealed that technically it was not THAT wound which killed him, but rather the horrific stabbings Jaspers accomplices committed moments later, he claims he did not murder him. I’m not a judge, and I’m not an ME, but by my personal standards Jasper is a murderer.

We don’t have the death penalty here in the UK, but I do believe that in cases with such a huge amount of evidence as this one, the death penalty is a fair call. Keeping people like Ray Jasper in prison for their entire loves costs a huge amount of tax payers money, and there is a huge amount of proof that he is indeed a killer. I don’t see why it’s sad that he’s going to die. I don’t see why he is inspirational just because he happens to be able to write particularly well. I don’t believe that Ray Jasper was given the death penalty simply because he is a black man, and I think anyone who reads Steven Alejandros letter will agree with me.
