Jac's mum abandoned her. Years later she turns up out of the blue and Jac gives her a second chance. Then it turns out Paula has another daughter that she didn't abandon.
Fletch's dad abandoned him. Years later he turns up out of the blue and Fletch gives him a second chance. Then it turns out Steven has another son that he didn't abandon.
Holby City S20 E52 - Best Christmas Ever
Well, here we are folks, finally Holby Christmas episode 2 days late, and also technically the season finale (if it weren’t a weekly drama!).
Funny old episode. I can’t believe they nearly killed off Santa, I groaned when I first saw him lying in the hospital car park! I was rather rooting for him, so naturally am quite delighted that Hanssen saved him. Well, with Mo’s help.
Mo is a funny one. I always enjoyed her sass, but she seems to have come back with it all dialled up to 11, and sometimes the sheer full on-ness of it makes me cringe a little. I did like the trick she played on Jac though, implying that she and Derwood Thompson were having relationship issues - but then proving that to be a lie. Are they proof that a Holby couple can have a happy relationship? Perhaps, if she’s not in the show for the long haul...
Hanssen, the heart of the hospital and the head of the family, was awesome as usual. Loved his forceful moment - “He’s my patient, I will do this!”. Of course he was eventually going to take back the CEO position, but I loved that so many of the staff were so behind him to do so. I mean, my goodness, can you imagine Connie Beauchamp as CEO? Actually, if I didn’t love Hanssen quite so much, I think I would rather enjoy seeing that!
The big Fletcher family drama. Well, I have no idea what Christmas witchery this was, but I actually found myself rooting for Steven in this episode, and I honestly thought that would never happen. It was, however, blindingly obvious from the first moment that any indication was given that Steven was the man Karen had thrown out, that the young woman he had been ‘seeing’ was Evie. Not going to go on about this storyline, but I do need to make a couple of shout outs: 1) Final scene with Fletch. Nice bit of acting. 2) Evie at Raf’s memorial. So lovely that he was remembered. 3) Jac’s epic face early in the episode when she and Evie were in the lift and Jaidyn got in, and Evie went all girly. Just perfect.
Speaking of Jac, I did spend the episode idly pondering if a line has been definitively drawn under Jac and Fletch. I think there were opportunities which could have been taken in this episode if it wasn’t done, and let’s face it, there is slow burn, and there is this deep freezer. Anyone got any ideas? Is the good ship Flac sunk before it even left port? Or just departure delayed?
Jac as Santa. Also a given!
The other major storyline, Xav and Donna, on AAU. To be honest, not much to say there either. I liked the combination of excessive intelligence and emotional immaturity in Mia, and I think Xav will have a hard time pulling the wool over that one’s eyes. Considering it was a Christmas episode, I was glad to see Serena, however briefly, and however much she’s not currently top of my Christmas card list... I do think she could have looked a little less happy when dancing with Ric in Albie’s though. Still, her drama is coming.
So next week starts the excitement of season 21, when we can expect to see all sorts of old faces pop up. Since I am a long time fan here (I remember watching Season 1 Episode 1 when it was first aired on the BBC!), this does excite me somewhat. And Cameron is back! I am also looking forward to seeing Dawn Steele take up the role of Ange Goddard in 2 weeks time. As long as she’s not a love interest for you know who... (Although they would be missing a portmanteau trick - Sere-nge :D)
Manitoba Party board members say they didn't know about Fletcher's plans
A Manitoba MLA and former federal cabinet minister is taking a page from Maxime Bernier's playbook and becoming the leader of a new party.
Steven Fletcher is planning to take over the leadership of the Manitoba Party after finding himself on the outs with the federal and provincial Tories.
He ran for the Manitoba Progressive Conservatives after losing his federal seat and won in 2016, but a year later was booted out of that caucus for publicly breaking with the party on a number of policies, including voting against a bill to create a Crown corporation on energy efficiency.
