R.P. Russell House and Garage (Claim Shanty), 819 26th Street West, Minneapolis, MN
Besides the Stevens House(1850) at Minnehaha Park, these two buildings are the 2nd (1852) and 3rd (1855) oldest existing dwellings on the west side of Minneapolis. In 1872 the west side (north, south and southwest Minneapolis) merged with the east side, St. Anthony (currently northeast and southeast Minneapolis). The east side's oldest existing dwelling is the Godfrey House, built in 1849.
In 1852 when federal lands on the west side opened to settlement, Roswell P. Russell (who lived in St. Anthony) staked a claim near Lake Calhoun approximately at 28th and Hennepin and put up a claim shanty. The frame house was built three years later. In 1872 a brick house was built to replace the frame house at 2800 Hennepin. The old frame house and claim shanty were moved to the other side of Russell's pasture, where they currently reside at Bryant and 26th. The claim shanty was later converted to a garage. Coincidentally, the house is for sale.
The brick house was razed at the turn of the century to build West High School. West High School closed in 1982, it's gym lives on as the Uptown YMCA.
