chasing butterflies, Steven Schroeder
watercolor on 140 lb cold pressed paper, framed and ready to hang I went into the studio after a morning walk on a cold March day thinking of the clouds building behind a line of trees. As I began to work with the clouds (and as the pigment and the paper began to work with me), a leaping figure chasing a butterfly emerged. There is a magic mushroom too, and -- winter storm warning or no -- I do believe spring is on the way.

sky waking at twilight, Steven Schroeder
This painting is one in a series done in a collaboration with poet Jonas Zdanys that resulted in Red Stones, Poems by Jonas Zdanys, Paintings by Steven Schroeder, published by Lamar University Press in 2016. The painting is water color on 140 lb cold pressed paper, 14x20 inches, with a 2.5 inch white mat, in a simple bamboo frame. The title is taken from one of the poems, included here with the permission of the author and publisher: IX Snow falls cold and thick in the fields of asphodel, pale meadows near the margins of a pallid sea. Waves break on the dying embers of afternoon, the blank corners of the sky waking at twilight to spare colors and the hollow pausings of ice among the stones: an inexorable world where the lamentations of gray ghosts gutter above the empty plains and narrow orbits of our lives.
