HERE IS THE STEVE/RUMLOW FIC I WANT

i want a steve that’s really goddamn sad as he works at shield, maybe pre-him and natasha becoming buds. and i want him to be inexplicably drawn to rumlow. he’s kinda rough around the edges but he’s honest (so steve thinks), and he doesn’t treat him like captain america, just like steve. and there’s something almost familiar about him...but he cant quite put his finger on it.

meanwhile, trash bag rumlow, has studied bucky barnes ever since he got this assignment from hydra. “get as close to rogers as possible, by whatever means” pierce had told him. and there was no one closer to steve than james buchanan barnes, right? so he studies bucky, his mannerisms from video reels, the way he talked, his inflections. practices that rough brooklyn accent. but he can’t make it too obvious. so he has to do a balance of bucky mannerisms to draw steve in, but not enough that steve will notice.

THIS IS THE RUMLOW/STEVE FIC I WANT. 

i think the closest i’ve come to this is in the most recent part of not easily conquered (by drop-deaddream and whatarefears), rumlow starts quoting bucky’s letters at steve during their fight, new york accent and all. CHILLS. I LOVE IT.

everyday since the winter solider has come out i have wailed in despair at the lack of steve/rumlow

RIGHT goddamn it fandom

besides Natasha and then later Sam, Rumlow is pretty much the only person Steve is even vaguely chummy with! does working with him remind Steve of the Howling Commandos? are they the kind of work friends who maybe grab a beer sometime, watch a boxing match or a baseball game?? does Rumlow talk about his Army buddies and the STRIKE guys he’s worked with and every so often Steve talks about Dum Dum or Jim or Dernier or maybe, maybe sometimes Bucky and Rumlow just nods and goes back to his beer??? does Rumlow catch Steve looking twice at a guy sometime because pal, subtle you ain’t???? does Rumlow make his own no-nonsense ‘I didn’t know you were into that, Cap’ pass, no pressure, just offering, it would really round out this whole baseball and beers thing we’ve got going????? how long before it starts to leak into the SHIELD workout room, after missions, during missions, Steve really starting to appreciate the way Rumlow has his six??????

THESE ARE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

(also imagine Steve and Rumlow using those super strong magnetic cuffs from the elevator scene, where has Steve seen those before hmmmm)

like, there’s been some Rumlow/Bucky, I get that cool, I’m reading, but COME ON, gimme some of the sweet dirty terrible two-faced loathing Steve/Rumlow
