The valley unfurled beneath us, displaying its assortment of gems-- glittering like stars cemented to the ground. San Francisco was not just a city bracketing the bay but one of constellations. It swarmed and swelled like sea: lights weaved on busy intersections, others remained still, confined to their foundations. A deep sensation of belonging moved in my heart.
It was dark, so much so that I stumbled through the bush. Weeds and thorns nipped at my ankles. My body groaned from the exertion uphill, but the painting below seemed to repress all those troubles. I howled with the wind and the wind howled back. I was no more than a soldier to my country, an ant among a million others and yet my loyalty remained. My country, my country, my country. It echoed and pulled at me, reeling; I felt on the verge of an invitation to one of its secrets.
I strained to listen, certain I was entering the prelude to something. The gentle quips of my company damped their words.
I waited for the whistle of the wind to die down, for my unkempt hair to stop whipping around me. I entertained my friends, and when I was certain that the wind would not return, I began the trek back down. I took one last gaze, for memory’s sake, turned to it my back, and in my rear view mirror saw home become a distant speck..
