Happy half birthday, my little guy!

Six months is always such a big milestone. Somewhere between last fall and now, he grew up immensely, from thin infant barely able to suck to a happy little person. At his six-month appointment, he weighed 21 pounds and was 28.5 inches long. He easily wears 18-month clothes. He can still fit into some 9-month pants, but only in warm weather, because they are more like shorts. Love his little rolls and watching him figure out how to control his body.

This month, Murray Thomas ate. He ate bites of guac and queso and sucked on lots of spoons containing tastes of his sisters’ things (whoops on that strawberry fro-yo). He enjoys mashed bananas and mum-mums, and things that aren’t baby food the most. 

He celebrated his first St. Patrick’s Day and Easter (mainly with goofy outfits). He rolled over. He started talking and babbling a lot. He went in a swing at the park for the first time. He sat in a restaurant high chair. He wears 18 month clothes, always growing out of stuff and forcing me to sort out bins and give away items that seemed to be too big just weeks ago.

And in the moments in between, he seems like he just hangs out. Mellow and relaxed, mostly, focusing on his sister’s jumping off the bed, chewing on Sophie or other edible toys (so much chewing…when will a tooth emerge from that lumpy bottom gum?), kicking his legs to rock his Bjorn bouncer or jump the jungle jumper, staring at me intently as I cook dinner or do laundry, gazing out the car window, watching sunlight pour into the living room from the early spring.

He really has a hard time nursing if we are out and about. He prefers a quiet, dark room with the sound machine on, nursing to his heart’s content before a nap or bedtime. He takes a bath every night, either with his sisters or splashing on his own in a few inches of water, no matter how worked up or tired he is, the water always calms him down. He likes looking at books, hearing us sing, having his belly tickled or cheeks raspberry’d. He laughs and smiles so joyfully these days, and makes himself known. Just this week in the car, Anthea was bopping him with a bright red balloon on a stick. He giggled the whole ride home, and I thought about how much I love this age. Six months is very near perfect when it comes to babyhood, I think.

I wish I had more time. More minutes of each day to stare at my last little baby, breathe in his lavender-honey-milk scent, wrap his fingers around mine and just be. There is so much growing that happens every day, it seems, and always so many places to go. I’m trying to make an effort to be present and mindful of how short the time is, even when the nights can be so long.

I love to see him light up when I walk in. To instantly calm when I hold him against me. To find exactly what he needs (usually milk) in my embrace.

Our Daughter turned 1! We can't believe a year has gone by so fast. Every month we took her photo in the same spot to make a fun collage to hang up.  If your having a baby you definitely need to get some Sticky Bellies to see the growth in your baby each month. Try to take the picture in the same spot each month too!
