I just finished Turning red. I'm on my period so I'm feeling A LOT™ right now so here it goes:
I'm not Chinese and no one in my family is Chinese. I'm Latin American (Argentinian, specifically). HOWEVER this hits too close to home as well. I can speak from my culture and the way I was raised and everything makes so much sense it's scary. I felt like Mei and Ming for a long time when I was a teen and even after I became an adult, because that feeling of not being good enough is so hard to shake. I still feel like that sometimes. The difference was that I would get slapped in the face if I talked against my mother so for Reasons I never did it. The only time I could be brave enough to say what I felt (and I cried all the way through) was when I was 23, so imagine.
Anyway, I feel like this movie is great and it captured the exact feeling of being feeling like a disappointment to your family ALL while going through the trouble of being a 13-year-old girl.
THE EMBARRASSMENT of someone finding out who your crush is or that you got your first period (another traumatic event).
Great movie, will definitely watch again and fight anyone who disagrees.
— You always gave me what I needed but that doesn't mean that I can't tell you what you are doing is wrong. — I am the one who is helping you but who is going to help me?
