my favourite thing about bolaire and hal is how we witness their relationship at its worst from the start. yes, we are immediately graced with the picture of them being super lovely around each other in the overture and bolaire being protective of hal's kids but a few episodes later there's a breach. and this is much more interesting to watch than if it was just them drinking coffee and talking about literature (even though i'm not against it). this is not «my close friend Bolaire who is a little bit weird but also really cool and i like him a lot» but «my close friend Bolaire who is The Weirdest fucker in this city and he is a sentient mask that kills people and that is literally too much for me but i also trust him endlessly and this is fucked up».
