"Those who would repeat the past must control the teaching of History" - Bene Gesserit Coda
Still not over this! I cant ever remember seeing the male and female leads of a movie wear the same outfit on a red carpet, albeit in different colours.
Such a clever way to do a nod to stillsuits. I even like that Law, Zendaya's stylist, got their custom JUUN.J jumpsuits in pink and blue (as all the articles described them; ignore that they look peach and grey in some photos.) He's making a statement about how future fashion will be more gender neutral but to make it palatable to us he put them in gender coded colours. That's both clever and funny. Also, bold move on Timothee Chalamet's part for wearing the same thing as Zendaya : how many people wd dare that?! Such a cool collab! Fashion history was made here!
Dune du du du duuune
Unfortunately due to a variety of factors I wasn’t really able to see Dune (2021) until its theatre run was almost over but I have to say I really appreciated both the design of the stillsuits, how those designs are consist across genders of the wearers and the relatively increased presence of female characters compared to the 1984 film of the same name. My wife particularly enjoyed getting to see a mother be a badass.
The suits, while covered with many probably unnecessary details and doodads, still convey their utilitarian purpose of giving you a chance to survive on a harsh desert planet.
It’s particularly good since anyone familiar with the books knows two things about the meta of the Dune series:
Frank Hubert was extremely passionate about the utilitarian nature of stillsuits and looked for literally every opportunity to bring it up in the text.
After Frank passed away and his estates took over, the series descended into unmitigated horniness that barely relates to Frank’s work.
So I’m glad they didn’t use the later books as an excuse to let a creepy marketing guy go wild.

This has been bugging me for ages, but what are the stillsuits and why do characters wear them?
Ahhh the Stillsuits--Next to the giant worms and the desert, the stillsuits are probably the most distinctive visual element of the Dune Universe that whacks viewers over the head with "THIS IS DUNE!!!" You see someone in a funky, tight gray-black outfit with kind of creepy pouchy looking features and a little thingie trailing from their nose and you go, "Oh yeah. Dune."
Well, since Dune is so so so fucking dry and hot, you can die within hours (or less!) from dehydration, so the Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, developed the Stillsuits! The stillsuits are a highly sophisticated protection and filtration system that, when worn properly (including the face mask!!), regulates your body temperature, protects you from the killer suns, and using the motions of your own body, shoops up water from your sweat, exhalations, pee, and feces, and filters it back to you through a handy sippable tube! The filtered water tastes brackish, but a properly worn and well-maintained stillsuit of high quality can keep the wearer alive for weeks on the open desert!
It’s also worth noting that following Paul’s all-consuming Holy War, stillsuits become very fashionable in the Dune universe, with many fashion companies putting out stylish faux-stillsuits that have the look, but not the function, of stillsuits.
