The hoatzin is a medium sized, pheasant-like bird from South America. Also called “reptile bird,” “stinkbird,” and “Canje pheasant,” their taxonomy is widely debated by scientists. A submission for @avilloary

In celebration of National Bird Day, let’s talk about Hoatzins: they are the only living representatives of one of the most ancient lineages of birds, with origins about 64 million years ago. Young hoatzin have two claws on the bones that support their flight feathers, and if a chick falls from the nest, it can claw its way back to safety. Found in swamps around South America, Hoatzins are also commonly known as “stinkbirds." This species exclusively feeds on leaves, which are difficult to digest. Bacteria in their multi-chamber digestive tracts do the heavy lifting and in the process release methane, so the birds burp out an unpleasant odor! Photo: Murray Foubister
