Amtrak's Pere Marquette The Pere Marquette has just made its station stop at St. Joseph, Michigan. The train is named for the former rail line here, the Pere Marquette Railway—prior to that it was the Chicago and West Michigan and afterwards the Chesapeake & Ohio. Going back further, that name for the railway comes from the French Jesuit missionary who founded Michigan’s first European settlement. One image by Richard Koenig; taken June 19th 2025.

Because Saint Joseph was the representative of our Heavenly Father on earth, because he acted as Christ's father in His life on earth, he is the divinely appointed head of the Holy Family. The Holy Family; of Saint Joseph, The Blessed Mother and the Son of God is the beginning and the model for the great Family of God, His Church here on earth. In this way, Saint Joseph is a father to all of us.

Today, on Holy Monday we celebrate the Righteous Joseph the All-Comely. Saint Joseph is one of the Patriarchs of the Old Testament and was the second youngest son of the Righteous Jacob, later renamed Israel. Joseph was sold by his brothers out of jealousy to slavery in Egypt. Because of his gentle demeanour, Joseph quickly climbed the social ranks in Egypt, earning the respect of Pharaoh and becoming second in charge of all Egypt. The most famous story of Joseph is when he was approached by Potiphar's wife as she slyly tried so tempt him to sin, being enchanted by his handsome appearance. Joseph, fleeing from sin, left behind his garment which Potiphar's wife tried to grab hold of and escaped naked, but not ashamed, just like Adam before the fall. Joseph is given the epithet "All-Comely" because he was beautiful not only in appearance, but in character and virtue. The Patriarch Joseph is considered a prefiguration of Jesus Christ Himself as the Lord too was sold by his own brethren and thrown into a pit (the tomb) and emerged victorious. Pope Francis has declared a “Year of St Joseph” from 8 December 2020 to 8 December 2021. The Pope has also written a new Apostolic Letter, Patris corde (With a Father’s Heart) marking the 150th anniversary of the declaration of St Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. Francis suggests that many ‘ordinary’ people who have quietly helped others through the pandemic are images of St Joseph, himself a ‘hidden presence’ who nonetheless played ‘an incomparable role in the history of salvation’. Jesus, he says, saw the image of God’s tender love in the person of Joseph.
