Value based on Sales
Price-to-Sales? Is that’s not for real. Isn’t that what what they did back around 2000 to pump high-flying internet stocks? Actually, PS is a very important and very valuable (pardon the pun) ratio. So too is EVS, or Enterpise Value to Sales.

Valuation Series - The Initial Screen
As I mentioned before, I aim to take you through a series of valuation exercises to show you the steps and hopefully some of the insights you need to come to a decision to sell, buy, or hold a specific security.
To get our exercise started, I have created a simple screen to see what is out there. If the screen doesn't yield any useful picks, I will discard it and start again. Note that in a fairly valued or slightly overpriced market, it may be very difficult to find good deals, so we should not expect to find gems sitting out there in the open.
Still, let's jump into it.
My simple value screen consists of the following criteria:
Price to book value < 3.5. This is a pretty generous book value, as I try to keep it under 3, but I wanted to first look at candidates and see if there is a good reason for the price to book ratio.
Return on equity (5 year average) > 15%. With a cost of equity of about 10%, I tend to look for companies that can easily beat that. Furthermore, companies with ROE consistently greater than 15% signal some sort of competitive advantage. I did not use current ROE to open the possibility of finding firms who are performing below average recently.
Dividend yield > 1%. This is not a very aggressive dividend target but, again, I wanted to see what's out there.
Industry is in consumer packaged goods, retail, fashion, restaurants, or food processing or distribution.
Region: Canada and US
What I found was 10 companies, both medium and small cap, in various industries:
BMTC Group: Canadian holding company of retail stores for household electronics and appliances. Regional to Quebec.
Cato Corp: American fashion retail chain with about 1,300 stores in 32 states.
Darden Restaurants: Onwers of several restaurant banners including Olive Garden and until recently, Red Lobster.
Flowers Foods: Large bakery with almost $4 billion in revenues, based in Georgia.
Guess Inc: Designer and marketer of apparel and accessories with market cap of about $1.9 billion.
Inter Parfums: Developer and marketer of fragrances with annual sales of about $480 million.
Lassonde Industries: Canadian processor of fruit and vegetable juices and drinks. Stock has gone up 76% in the last two years, significantly outpacing the S&P 500.
Natures Sunshine Products: Manufacturer and marketer of health and nutrition related products. The smallest company in the filter, it has revenues of $380 million.
Nu Skin Enterprises: Developer of cosmetics and nutritional supplement products with a market cap of about $2.5 billion.
Take a quick look at these firms. Over the next couple of weeks I will be testing whether they deserve a deep dive and valuation or not. First, I will go through each and get a sense of their current situation, and if there is any hint that the market may be under valuing the stock.
I have provided a brief summary below:
Let me know what you think!
