Past, Present, Future

The dynamic between Ice, Earth and Stone in Matoran culture is criminally underexplored in canon. In the Metru Nui saga we learn that the elements represent a focus on Past (Onu), Present (Po) and Future (Ko) from a cultural standpoint.

Onu Matoran are archivists. They meticulously catalogue and archive everything that is found. On Mata Nui, this is still reflected in a line about lessons that can be learned from what is hidden beneath the earth. Their preoccupation with the past can leave them a little socially stunted but this is compensated by their naturally patient and quiet disposition.

Po Matoran culture is about the present. Being present. A good athlete or artist knows that one only improves through practice. Sure, they are working on a goal for the future and they learn from their past but all that really matters to them is the here and now. This can cause them to seem focused to the point of tunnel vision.

Ko Matoran are meant to read the stars and interpret the will of Mata Nui. This is, in fact a very literal task given the nature of the Matoran Universe. The “head in the clouds” nature makes them appear distant from other Tribes. Their focus on the future makes them meticulous planners and quick to poke holes in the plans of others.

The three tribes have much they can learn from one another but require open minds to do so. Do you identify with any of these three? How do you interact with the other two?

Script angels (stone element)

🧬Their variants are Umber (main image), Ochre, and Lampblack. Script angels possess a relaxed and composed nature, and are similar in strength to a rhino.

🧬These angels sequence and record DNA with the codex down their torso. Being the lowest rank of angel, they are fairly limited in what they can do with this ability. Small crystals in the shape of fossils like their skin- these shapes are often determined on the where stone that the angel was created from originated.

🧬Their blood is a volatile reagent for stone magic which can be secreted from their brushlike tails, and can be used to induce mutation or can be crystallised into a completely harmless state- although it is often used as a paint. Some choose to paint patterns onto themselves, usually simple shapes or references to DNA.

🧬When script angels are deep in thought, their codex may flick through the letters A,C,T and G by itself even though they are not actively using magic.

Land angels (stone element)

A common hobby of this angel is to stand at the edges of fields and watch crops grow. On sunny days, land angels stretch out their limbs and translucent wings to bathe in the sunlight, where their bodies gleam a deep red-brown rather than black.

Common offerings for this angel include suncatchers, stones from fields, or a small percentage of harvested crops.

The wings around their head usually stay tucked away, unless the sun comes out or the angel experiences a sudden emotion (think joy, fear, surprise, etc). The land angel is a patron of crops, farming, and territory. Often prayed to for success in harvest, and disputes over property.

The negative side of this angel would be earthquakes, landslides, and destruction of property. If a land dispute cannot be solved properly, this angel can become frustrated and seek to drive the opposing parties out of the area- no matter the cost.

This stubborn and tyrannical anger is a trait shared by all stone angels, as it is a reflection of their deity. Thankfully, they are also very difficult to provoke.
