So I wasn't going to say anything, but after much thought, I've decided that I needed to share this.
Yesterday I checked my inbox and found that I had received a comment on one of my fics that I had written a while back, Of broken hearts, break-ups and bridging gaps.
I happen to be one of those people who get reallt excited when I see I get new kudos or comments on any of my fics, and this was the case when I saw that I had gotten a comment yesterday, except I was soon disheartened.
As an art student irl, I have come to accept and even welcome constructive criticism of all sorts. I study graphic design, and before that I was a visual arts student so I've had my fair share of teachers, lecturers and fellow students tell me that they didn't like my work, or it wasn't good enough or simply too clichéd. And at first I used to get so upset by it and always wondered if I should maybe swap to a different subject. But now I appreciate being told because I can always learn from my mistakes or come to perfect my work in the future.
After all, art is something that always changes and not everything can be to everyone's liking. I consider writing a form of art, and it's something I like doing. I freelance and write for clients when I can, and I write fanfics for myself in my own time. These are two separate things. I readily accept criticism on my writing, just like I do with my art.
However, I feel that I HAVE to say something:
We, as writers, do not owe you as a reader ANYTHING. We write for ourselves because we like doing it. We write for those that like our work, and we write as a way to express ourselves. We do not have to explain our thought process, or make changes to our works to suit your liking simply because you do not like the way a character was written or the plot is not going in the direction you wished it would.
Again, I accept criticism. But I do not accept disrespect and people being rude or unkind. And I'll go back to the age old saying; if you do not have anything nice to say, then don't say it at all.
I received a comment from a reader telling me how they would not carry on reading the chapter they were on because they couldn't stand the way I'd written Tony as the one being blamed for everything. How they couldn't stand the 'domineering relationship Pepper and Tony had' in MY fic. Which, actually, I was not aiming for. Also, they told me that Tony being the bad guy in stony fics was the reason why this couple shouldn't be shipped.
(I'll attach the screenshots of this person's comment, as well as my response so you can see it.)
What I'm trying to say is that readers often get really confused and start to blur the lines where fanfics are concerned. They DO NOT have the right to order writers what to do. They DO NOT have the right to tell us how unhappy they are with a fic simply because it's not to their liking. There is a reason there is a back button; if you do not like a fic you can exit it and find a new one to read.
The tone of this comment suggests that this person was either A.) upset because they had read a few horrible fics before mine and simply got triggered by something really insignificant in my fic and decided to leave a horrible comment, or B.) was having a bad day and decided they needed to hurt someone else because they were feeling hurt.
What I don't understand is why, if you're not going to continue reading my fic because you don't like the way it was written, you'd decide to scroll all the way to the bottom to leave a horrible comment stating that you're not going to carry on reading my fic. It's time consuming and petty. Just leave my fic and find a new, much better one.
I understand that most people won't like some of my fics and that's okay! Really, I'm not offended or upset, in fact, I have other fics to choose from.
I love Marvel and Stony, and while this is the best fandom, it's also the most toxic place for people because fans don't realize that writers can change the narrative in their fics. Canon can be changed to suit our liking. We can make subtle changes to a character to make them fit better into our fics, or we can make a certain character the certified 'bad' or 'good' guy.
Enjoy the fics that we writers post for you to read, but I urge you to rethink before you decide to leave a comment. We don't owe you anything. You have no right to get annoyed if we don't go with one of the prompts you suggested, or an idea you liked and thought would suit the fic were currently writing. You can't throw a hissy fit because you think someone is writing your favorite character differently. In fact, if you think we're doing a bad job of writing YOUR favorite character, why don't YOU write a fic??? Seeing as it's so easy? We do this because we like it, not because a gun is being held to our bead and we were ordered to do it. Things like this is what makes being a fan and writer really difficult.
*this post is not eloquently put nor, is it properly thought out as my thoughts were all over the place when writing this. It's basically a rant at this point, and I apologize if my thought process is messy, but I needed to bring light to this. It's something that I've been meaning to say and witnessed with other writers in this fandom and it's simply not acceptable.
Below you can find the comment of the reader which I've left anonymous because I don't want an argument, and then you can also see my response. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
If you guys have any stories like this, leave a comment. Even better, if you have an opinion on this, share it with me. I'd like to know what you think.
All I ask is that people be kind. I don't think that I should be apologizing for my writing when you're the one who chose to go through with something you knew you weren't going to enjoy.
