The reason I hate Vine so much, as in hatred beyond any other "social” platform out there, is because of their autoplay on tumblr.  Rot in hell, Vine.

Change font for no reason? Check. Make links uglier? Check. Add unnecessary horizontal lines? Check. Make autoplaying of videos and Vines optional so that people don't get seizures from visiting our site NAH FUCK THOSE GUYS HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Why is it that everything I’ve done to stop Vines from autoplaying (Tumblr Savior + AdBlock Plus) has stopped working?

Stop Autoplay?

I can use XKit to stop animated GIFs from playing without my permission, but I’ve yet to find a way to stop autoplaying videos. This is REALLY IMPORTANT for me as I’m very photosensitive and lately there have been more and more videos on my feed (especially ones that involve flashing or flickering). If I can’t find a fix, I might actually have to stop using Tumblr in order to protect myself. If anyone knows a way to stop this, please respond to this post or send me a message. Thank you.

I know I’m hardly the only person who has issues with this. Tumblr staff, please STOP THE AUTOPLAY or at least give us an option to disable it. I’m feeling more and more like this web site is being run by children of the same variety who used to put embedded MIDI and animated backgrounds on their GeoCities pages. Pro Tip: You can add whatever features you want to your web site, but you need to make sure the potentially harmful ones are OPTIONAL, otherwise you risk losing an entire demographic from your user base (and anyway it’s just a dick move).

Dear Tumblr,

Your autoplay video "feature" is absolute bullshit. Seriously, even a design intern could tell you it's an awful idea to implement such a thing without an option to disable it.

Stopping autoplay - the solution

Follow the directions for your browser here. I just followed the instructions for firefox and it managed to block autoplay launching on a blog that had one of those horrific hidden autoplays that you can't stop other than by closing the tab. Also stopped the replay on a blog with a visible widget.

AdBlock also works nicely. I blocked the frame for an autoplay widget and it blocked all the content on the page. Perhaps it was slightly TOO effective but it stopped the music, didn't it?
