CoreCivic and GEO Group’s investors expressed frustration that ICE’s record immigration detention numbers aren’t high enough.

CoreCivic’s revenue from contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) skyrocketed in 2025, but some participants on today’s quarterly earnings call expressed concerns that ICE had not detained as many immigrants as investors hoped.

“One of the big questions…has been the pace of detention by ICE, that it’s been below what investors thought [it] was going to be,” one caller said. “I think people thought we’d be at that 100,000 level. We’re at a little over 70,000.”

ICE’s detained population is at its highest level since the agency’s creation in 2003. The majority are incarcerated in for-profit prisons, which has meant millions of dollars in revenue for the private prison industry. Leading for-profit prison companies, including CoreCivic and GEO Group, donated about half a million dollars to Republican members of Congress currently in office, and $57,000 to Democratic congressmembers, from 2021 through 2025, according to an investigation by The Appeal.

The moderate governor is proposing a different tax to help the New York City mayor fill a yawning budget gap.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani have developed a great political relationship. Hochul is an establishment figure but a pragmatic one who leans a bit to the progressive side. Among other things, she endorsed Mamdani over her predecessor Andrew Cuomo in last year's race for NYC mayor.

The two have now found a new way to raise revenue for NYC without scaring away businesses.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposed tax on pricey New York City real estate is offering yet another desperately needed financial boost to rookie Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Hochul is backing an annual surcharge on non-primary Big Apple residences that are worth $5 million and higher, with the proceeds going toward paying down Mamdani’s $5.4 billion city budget gap. In proposing the tax, the moderate Democratic governor is again going to bat for the freshman democratic socialist mayor, risking political attacks from the right and alienating the business community by reversing her opposition to raising taxes this year. But the surprise move stands to also help Hochul bolster her support in vote-rich New York City, where the Buffalo-born governor will need to run up the score as she seeks reelection this year. At the same time, the tax proposal further deepens an increasingly symbiotic relationship between Hochul and Mamdani. “It is one of the most politically efficient decisions she can make,” Democratic strategist Trip Yang said. “She can maximize a broad spectrum of allies and minimize criticism. It is a politically optimal decision and it’s a sound policy decision.”

While Trump is picking fights with Pope Leo and blockading the Strait of Hormuz, Democrats are working together to solve problems.

I wonder if Trump will be affected by this real estate tax considering he still owns a residence at Trump Tower.
