Long rant about character bashing (specifically civil war/post civil war)

I feel like I just have to express my hatred for character bashing. Why go out of your way to make a character seem worse than they are in canon just because you don’t enjoy writing them? Just,, leave them alone.

It irks me to read Civil War fics where suddenly Captain America is this huge illogical asshole with no regard for good decision making and gets all nervous and embarrassed when Tony is pointing out every flaw. Or vice versa when Tony’s the asshole who doesn’t care about harming his teammates or bringing a kid onto the battlefield. It portrays one side as superior from the other when both sides are equally wrong and right and turns a nuanced discussion into this black and white good and bad type thing when it’s not.

It takes what’s interesting about the political aspect of the mcu and just turns it into “cap doesn’t like accountability” and “Tony has no morals and hates his teammates” and I absolutely loathe that. It’s always such a missed opportunity because we have all these amazing characters with different ideals, motivations and drives and to reduce it to “this guy good, this guy no” just,, why. It’s usually so out of character as well, for both the character being bashed and the one doing the bashing and it comes off as the author simply being petty about their dislike for a certain character.

I really don’t mind if it’s included in the tags. If you don’t like a character and your fic is going to be bashing one and you have a tag in your post than that’s fine because I know to avoid it. If you enjoy it, that’s cool. Please just tag fics properly so I don’t get riled up with comments going “😡 Steve how dare you not sign the accords. You’re not a good friend to Tony”

I saw a lot of posts (on tumblr mostly) hating on jjk. Those posts were pretty much comparing jjk to other anime of not really the same genre (i saw it compared to fma LMAO ISTG GO OUTSIDE AND TOUCH SOME GRASS) and judging it only from the first idk 4 episodes. I get it that if you don't like something you don't keep watching it but I think that some people took it very personally that their indie series didn't get the level of animation that jjk got. I admit that it's not a regularly told story and, while some of the plot points are interesting, they are not told perfectly in terms of narrative (but I think it's mostly bc jjk was born as a one shot series) and some aspects of the universe are left up to reader's interpretation and not explained properly (when master tengen was introduced i thought I had missed some chapters bc the way the characters talked abt him made me suppose that the reader should have also known smt abt them).

I mean, there are countless anime of worse quality (in terms of actual plot and not just narrative) that got astoundingly good animation. It's not the first instance and it won't, for sure, be the last. I think it deserved the aoty prize from crunchyroll because it gets his job done and it is entertaining. And it also provides us with some unexpected events (I'M LOOKING AT YOU JUNPEI) and it does subvert a fair amount of shonen tropes!

Why do we celebrate characters' birthdays?

So why do we fans celebrate Kiryu's birthday, Majima's or really any fictional character?

Well...

Characters for a lot of people including myself aren't just a bland person that only differs from the one next to them because they differ either slightly or a lot.

Fictional characters have their own backstory, unique traits and human characteristics, flaws and things they're good at.

So basically you can like a character because of their appearance. Maybe their story is close to theirs so in a way, you feel like somebody might actually understand you.

Even though sadly for a lot of cases these people do not exist that doesn't mean they haven't helped us. All of these times you read a book or saw a movie/series or played a game and saw that one character crack a joke that slightly made your day. These minutes they give us that we can laugh alongside with them, cry for them or even fall in love are what they mean to us.

Just because a movie isn't based on a real story that doesn't mean that you can't cry with the characters.

Just because the characters of the video game series you've spent so many hours with had something happened to them that isn't real that doesn't take out the connection you have with them.

Just because you wish a fictional character was real, never makes you crazy.

So people who continue to bash on the fandoms of different series because we grief with deaths, laugh at jokes and take things seriously, please try to invest yourself in something for hours, try to find something that makes your day better even for some minutes and then come say stuff to us

There is a line between liking and obsessing over someone to a crazy extent. Please never twist the words that are said here. Obsessing isn't good and will never will.

Plea for a lover (Plaidoirie pour une amoureuse)

Lucille is in love with Eliott. They both had live some great moments, they have lots of memories together. They lived great hapiness, deep sorrows. Perhaps the Eliott's diagnosis, perhaps the first crises, the first fears. And not to mention bipolarity... Maybe he was his first man, his first lover? She lived with him the first emotions, the first sighs. She is part of the family, knows his parents, knows everything about him. And then one day, without warning, Eliott met Lucas. So he left Lucille, like that, rough way, as he can do sometimes. Previously alongside her lover, she's alone now.

So yes, she had harsh words but imagine what she might be thinking or feeling... Eliott isn't well, she's worried sick about him. Not just because of jealousy, no, because of real anxiety. She sees Lucas as an unconscious teenager, unable to provide Eliott the protection she, herself, has provided to him for a long time. She only dreams of one thing ; Find a peaceful Eliott by her side. How to blame her? She mothers him ? Well... Maybe. But you know what ? She's just a teen who tries her best to protect her lover ! Lucas and she love Eliott just as much. The only difference between them? Eliott's choice. This Friday, on the barge, Lucille losed her temper, her words were hard, but shit, how would you react? She's neither a doctor nor a psychiatrist, she's just a young woman in love with a complex boy and bloody hell, in this role, I think she's doing pretty well!

After being deceived, dumped, ignored, she should, in addition, shows patience and wisdom? Admit it guys, you never been teenagers right ? ;) « She's terrible », « She's egocentric », « She doesn't really love Eliott », « Bitch »... Fuck that, she's just a broken girl in love !

To the people attacking Alina

Here is what happened: Before the free skating, Alina tripped over a television cable. She did not withdraw. Her team wanted her to, but she did not.

Rika was not mentioned.

More importantly, Alina was not the one who said this happened. Ted Barton, the nicest commentator in figure skating, said it. He had it secondhand from a Russia official.

Bashing

I just don’t get people who bash characters in fanfictions. It’s just boring and makes your writing seem really lazy.
