House of Echoes (shotgunsinlace) Chapter 8
Stop that Racket! || Noisemaster
What a miserable day.
As she prowled the rooftops of Sector Six, San’s grim expression cracked for a moment as she grimaced in pain. She was already huffing and puffing, even though she had only been at it for a few minutes.
This wouldn't do.
Tracking a meal was proving much harder than normal, and the turn in weather was no help. Being so far away from her den, she grew less and less familiar with her surroundings as she pushed on.
San often went on these trips to clear her mind and work off excess energy, as life among humans in the city turned out to be quite dull. Game was near-impossible to find, and she had resorted to hunting and gathering in the large parks found in Sector 6. There was very little land to explore, and she made quick work of finding food among the docile wildlife that could be found in the area.
In short, there was no thrill of the chase, no leg room.
Unfortunately, her last little venture had gotten her stuck in the hellish void of District Zeta for nearly two weeks.
She was now a ways away from her current den, having grown so restless that she chanced the journey if only to see what had changed in the odd weeks she had spent underground, lost in the near-dark and living off of little else besides rodents and the suspicious fruits and vegetables that grew down there.
Needless to say, the overcast sky was nothing short of a grand disappointment for her, having missed the sun for so long.
In any case, she was tired and hungry, her thin frame having worn down to an unhealthy skinniness after spending so long without a proper meal. That, coupled with the startling realization that she had lost the trail of what she had hoped was to be her dinner, had worn her patience down to the quick.
Just then, the gathering storm clouds overhead burst, drenching her in seconds. The wolf girl let out a growl, frustrated at herself for not noticing the weather sooner.
Normally, she wouldn't have minded the rain, but as sickly and hungry as she was, San couldn't afford to catch something now. She dismissed her concerns with approaching a human dwelling, too preoccupied with finding shelter so far from home.
There! Nearby was a house, larger than the rest, with a covered porch wide enough for her to stay dry until the rain stopped. Nimble even in her weakened state, San got under the shelter and shook out her hair and furs, leaving water droplets all along the wooden floor.
Alert for signs of movement coming from within the house, she sat stiffly against the wall near the side door, bone-weary after the events of the last few days, and though she told herself she wouldn't do this, it wasn't long before she fell into a dreamless sleep.
CW: Standard protocol for when the house phone rings is to pick it up and then immediately put it down again.
SZ: Standard protocol for when my house phone rings is to eye each other suspiciously until it stops.
CW: I do that too, but I didn't want the ringing to wake up my mother.
SZ: So it's not standard protocol, it's GHOST PROTOCOL. (That joke would work better if you could hear me humming the Mission Impossible theme and if I knew what ghost protocol was).
