As I am writing the Stop Writing Alone book, I’ve got a lot of things on my mind about how we can best show up for our craft and our community. Unsurprisingly, the topic of self-care is discussed, but I think of it as a three-fold necessity: physical self-care, emotional self-care, and, as constant creatives, we must also tend to our creative self-care. For me, this is tending to “filling up my cup” when I find that I have been “pouring out” too much — writing, podcasting, coaching, showing up to chats, DMs, and private messages — without replenishing. For me replenishing the stores through story inputs like reading, listening to music or podcasts, watching tv, movies or theater is one of my pivotal practices in creative self care. Another helpful practice is getting creative in other ways. I love to draw and paint for fun, or do sidewalk chalk or playdoh creations with my son. All of these things, which feel like (and look like) play, are very serious, non-negotiable parts of my creative self-care.
