out of the rotton ot4, who shares a braincell when they're alone? (evie is vv smart but loses a braincell with mal, carlos is a genius but will just open & close his mouth when alone with jay, etc etc)? sorry if this vague!
Jay and Mal definitely share a brain cell. Of the four, they were the first to be kind of friends and they always did dumb shit together. Fire? Awesome. Broken glass? Favorite plaything. Consequences? Never heard of it.
Jay and Evie have a few brain cells to share, at the beginning. Back when Evie is super interested in finding a boyfriend and didn’t realize she had her own brain cells, she would encourage whatever dumb shit Jay was doing because she wanted him to like her. Now that she realizes her worth, Evie is the one yelling at him to stop jumping off buildings and speeding in his car.
Jay and Carlos are the opposite. Before Carlos has friends and grows self esteem, he’s too skittish to do anything. What if his mother sees? What about pain? His whole life is filled with consequences, for things he didn’t even do! But now that he’s confident in himself, he’s an idiot with Jay, but it’s also because Carlos had no childhood? Like, none of the Isle kids had childhoods, but Carlos had it the worst. Now that he’s older and carefree and Jay offers a certain level of protection, Carlos is down to sneak out and play dumb pranks and just be happy. So the two of them share a brain cell, but it’s really just Carlos being free enough to enjoy life.
So Jay has a single brain cell at all times.
Evie, while crushing on Mal, has one brain cell. Mal is so pretty and confident and gives Evie all these butterflies that Evie will very happily do whatever Mal wants. But once they’re together and Evie stops being so star struck over this gorgeous girl, she’s very much over Mal and her wild antics. No, we’re not going back to the Isle because Auradon is hard. No, we’re not closing the barrier for good because you’re scared. Come here, let me make you hot cocoa and get you a blanket and solve all your problems, you lovely idiot.
Evie and Carlos are pretty good at not being overwhelmingly stupid. Sometimes they go along with their girlfriend and boyfriend and their bad decisions, but Carlos walked on eggshells for most of his life and Evie could never be crazy. The two of them are good at reigning in the chaos that is Mal and Jay and, when Carlos and Evie are left to their own devices, they just want to stay in the library. And if there’s a book that’s out of their reach, obviously, the best thing to do is climb the shelves and then enjoy the view, so they sit on top of the shelves, being quiet enough that no one ever looks up and sees them.
Carlos has a brain cell that disappears with Mal. She’s similar to Jay in that her confidence rubs off on Carlos. He holds back more than Mal does - like, instead of setting the school on fire, how about we just spray paint the lockers? - and keeps her from being in too much trouble. Jay goes along with everything and Evie stops everything but Carlos is a nice middle for her where he lets her have fun, but not like die or anything.
