If they could feel the blood and bone that lay under the skin, maybe then they would realize that these are people too. These are humans, animals, mammals, whathaveyou, that you slowly massacre. While the youth is sitting by and eating magic mushrooms and laughing stupidly with the smiles they have not earned because they have not suffered.
