So many have asked about the infamous Zapp cover, that I’ve decided to lay it out. The year was 1980, “World Funk Headquarters” 9000 Sunset, Los Angeles California. George Clinton asked Ron “Stozo” Edwards and I to design an album cover for the debut of Zapp! “There’s only one thang though - NO CHARACTERS” he demanded. He also insisted that we use all the wrong colors and shapes. Because he wanted colors that didn’t belong in the same room together! Why?? So that when the aliens finally landed, human beings would be more acclimated to deal with them, of course. Being clueless of how to approach the challenge, I sketched dozens of thumbnails, as Stozo began drawing the front cover with magic markers, right there on the floor. I transformed one of the thumbnail sketches into an airbrush illustration at my studio, for the back cover. Returning to World Funk Headquarters, we laid the front and back covers out on the floor and tossed the thumbnail sketches randomly onto the artwork, along with miscellaneous items that happened to be laying around, like a tiny (barely noticeable) plastic fly. More Bounce to the Ounce was such a radical sounding track - we were both leery that it would ever catch on. Only George was confident that it would be a smash! #georgeclinton #zapp #zappandroger #stozotheclown #stozo #overtonloydart #overtonloyd #parliamentfunkadelic #bootsycollins https://www.instagram.com/p/B_25sh_FWq3/?igshid=sa3zk6ia6gai
