T’was grand to be on the road again for St Patrick’s Day. Early on the morning of the 16th we made our way bleary-eyed to the bus station, ready for our first leg of what would become a full day of travel. High Street Hostel was on tour, and our little group consisted of Laura, Liz, Daniel, Amy and myself. Due to the ‘monopoly incident’ Daniel and I were strategically seated apart for the duration of our journey- for everyone’s sake.
We were off to a bumpy start, missing our bus from Dublin to Galway and almost losing Amy (communication is hard without modern technology, turns out you have to be prepared)!
Once settled in Galway we wandered beyond the little square and down Quay Street, which is famous for its traditional pubs. It was easy to see why Galway is known for being one of the safest and most-relaxed cities in Ireland, and although I was eager to be serenaded by dulcet Irish tones I was surprised by how many unfamiliar accents filled up the night. The crowd was truly cosmopolitan which should not have come as such a surprise, as Galway is also a massive hub for students and festivalgoers alike.
And sure we had a whale of a time! Though our first night was just one pint of Guinness at the Quays, a maze-like 3-story pub that was full of all the craic. Naturally, Galway Girl featured in the live set.
The next morning was full of expectation, excitement and a St Patrick’s Day street carnival which involved almost every community group you could think of (school footballs teams, cheerleaders, arthritis association, pride groups, latino dancers, school bands…). Amy (bless her sweet Irish heart) was stoked with the sunshine; by jaysis it was quare warm (for Ireland). We worked up our thirst by walking along the river Corrib and through the center of town. By then, it was definitely time to quench our thirst- Amy had thriftily supplied us with an Irish girls favorite drink (rose?!) and we sunned ourselves in the hostel courtyard for a few hours before seeking out some afternoon tea at Cupan Tae (Cup of Tea). Fancy, we know.
I’m not sure how we left the celebrations til so late in the day, but Quay Street did not disappoint! Local girls were already wobbling their way across the cobblestones in stripper heels, orange fake tan and bikini-dresses. Ireland you sexy minx. The night was a blur of overflowing pubs, Guinness foam moustaches, amazing live music and happy crowds. We indulged in a huge Irish breakfast the following morning before jumping on a bus back to Dublin where we would stay with Amy’s family- notably, her dog Benny who had an under bite so severe it was both frightening and adorable.
