Today’s birthday: Constance Markievicz. This formidable woman, born 153 years ago today, was a painter, revolutionary, nationalist, suffragist and socialist. She was sentenced to death for her part in the 1916 Easter rising. Her sentence was commuted, and she became the first woman elected to the Westminster Parliament. She was later elected Minister for Labour in the First Dáil, becoming the first female cabinet minister in Europe. Here’s a series of portraits of the main protagonists of the 1916 Easter Rising, painted for the Irish Independent over the centenary of the uprising. Sixteen leaders were executed in the days following the insurrection. James Connolly - injured in the fighting - was shot in a chair. Countess Markievitz escaped the firing squad, as the British authorities felt the optics of executing a woman would not be good, and thus she lived to see the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty, ninety-nine years ago yesterday. The treaty precipitated a bloody civil war which eventually led to the birth of the Irish Republic, and its final exit from the United Kingdom. Now Britain is - in a sense - leaving us, which feels a bit like Ringo announcing that he’s about to quit the Beatles. So long, Britain. We’re genuinely sorry to see you go. .
