As I was sitting on the floor with my legs straight out, doing PT exercises, I attempted to do an unassisted straight leg raise. I gathered all my strength together, activated my quads as best I could and amazingly, I got my leg up! It wasn’t pretty and it was a struggle but I was so excited. All those straight leg raises with 10 pound weights for months before surgery seem to have paid off. I would encourage anyone having this surgery to get a prehab program in place months before your MPFL reconstruction so you can build up the muscles and flexibility in the bad leg as much as possible. You will still get atrophy, the muscles will still shut down but the bounce back will be much quicker. And if you are a yogi, you will have the benefit of being familiar with leg stretches and already have some flexibility going in.
