Straight Off The Jump  

A short docu-drama celebrating the power, history and evolution of tand a group of youths who are willing to risk it all in order to be heard.

SYNOPSIS

SOTJ is set in a township and it follows the lives of a group young rappers who, while facing their own personal challenges, try channel what music used to mean to their community.

While constituting a generation that has embraced the destructive ideas of the ‘cool kid’ phenomenon that promotes materialism, the friends decide to take drastic action to use music as a weapon and they take on their whole community.

The story pages through the evolution of African oral tradition into what it is now called hip hop. It melds the sounds of ancient drums with modern synths and baselines to create a score that exemplies how, though things change, much still stays the same.
