"In the 80’s I was a columnist for De Volkskrant (a Dutch newspaper). The pieces I wrote were a kind of trips in the imagination. In one of those columns I wrote about a kind of skeletons on the beach that moved by the wind. They scooped up sand and my idea was that they would raise the dunes in that way and protect the Netherlands from rising sea level. I was obsessed by this idea and bought electricity tube in a DIY store. After some experiments with it, I had gained so many ideas and inspiration that I promised myself to give one year to this material. This intention totally got out of hand." - Theo Jansen

Another stray thought: Rocky's design and movement, apart from feeling very spider-like, felt familiar for a different reason that at first, I couldn't pinpoint.

But now I get it. It's Strandbeest, by Theo Jansen. No wonder I immediately felt endeared to the little shit, I've had a fascination with those art creatures for yeaaaars.

Strandbeest evolution 2025 - Theo Jansen

Strandbeest Evolution 2025 provides an update on the evolutionary development, which is going on since 1990. Every spring I go to the beach with a new beast. During the summer I do all kinds of experiments with the wind, sand and water. In the fall I grew a bit wiser about how these beasts can survive the circumstances on the beach. At that point I declare them extinct and they go to the bone yard.

Dutch contemporary artist @theojansen_official has created moving wooden sculptures called "Strandbeests".

Powered by wind and sun, these wooden skeletons are striking machines that you may have never seen anywhere else 😳
