Least Favorite Food: Strange Bun 🍞
Strange Bun is my least favorite thing because it looks so weird. I also got alot of them from killing certain monsters which was weird because why would you eat a strange bun from a monster? Also to make it you want to make it, you need void mayo which you need to process & you need periwinkle which is something you may not always catch.
Nobody likes it! But trust me, they’re tasty. Made with real Void Mayo! Watch it in action here.
What You Need:
1 1/4 cup + 1 1/2 TBL flour
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup buttermilk
3 TBL mayonnaise
2 tsp yeast
1 TBL sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 TBL butter
No-stick spray
Filling:
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp honey
1 tsp lemon zest
2 TBL butter, melted
3 TBL raspberry jam
1 tsp cornstarch
Powdered sugar, to serve
In a small bowl, whisk together your buttermilk and 1 1/2 TBL of flour. Cook in the microwave for 20 seconds. Place starter aside while you get the rest of your dough ready. In another bowl, combine milk, yeast and sugar. Whisk together. Allow to get foamy.
In the carafe of your food processor, combine yeast mixture, flour starter, the rest of your flour, salt and butter. Pulse until a dough forms, about a minute or two. Place on a lightly floured surface and knead for a minute. Place in a bowl and allow to rise for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
For your filling, combine sugar, honey and zest. Mix it between your fingers until sandy. In another bowl, combine raspberry jam and cornstarch.
Roll out dough into roughly 9 x 9 inches. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Brush the top with butter. Sprinkle your lemon sugar over most of the top. Leave a little exposed and spread on the raspberry mixture. Roll up your dough starting with jam end. Close the roll at the seams so nothing leaks out.
Slice in 6 even buns. Place in a muffin tin greased with no-stick spray. Grab the center of the buns and pull them up so they spire a little. Allow to rise for 30 minutes to an hour or until puffed up. Bake at 375 for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove buns while still warm. Once cooled down a bit, add more raspberry jam to the center if you like. Dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm.

Community center aesthetic for @strangebun !! This isn’t my best, and just to confirm the corners are center rewards, but I think it looks pretty nice!!
I will be doing my next requests!!!

Strange Bun & Void Mayonnaise
Lobster roll: 4/5
Black garlic mayo: 4/5
These might be rated more highly than I naturally would because I'm trying to fight my anti-lobster bias. The roll is good, better than other lobster rolls I've had, it just also wasn't super interesting. The roll started to fall apart a little towards the end of eating it along the lines of the swirl, so a little messier than a standard lobster roll. I liked the addition of the browned butter :)
This was my first time working with black garlic and it has a crazy strong smell!! The taste itself once mixed in is more mild than the smell would lead you to believe, a kind of more smoky taste than the standard aioli. Making the mayo was fun, but I think that was more because I ignored the instructions to hand wisk the mayo. I used an immersion blender, it worked well and didn't make me hate the project. I didn't use the charcoal it calls for to make it actually black (bad for meds) but it still looks unique and interesting.
