I love how Disney's concept of diversity is just admitting what we already knew!!
Executive claiming that the reason for the failure of "Lightyear" and "Strange World" was the inclusion of mature themes that American parents don't want their children exposed to... I hate executives.
I’m watching Strange World and it seems like a cute little movie. I’m not the biggest fan of Ethan. Not in a homophobic way, I hope he gets a date with the boy, but in a I dislike this teen trope of teens thinking they know more than their parent, especially in this movie bc Searcher was an adventurer.
I watched strange world. It’s not a bad movie but a lot of it was underdeveloped.
The relationship between Searcher and his father was not built up at all and honestly felt super forced and it was one of the things I really disliked about this movie.
We never got to explore the relationship between searcher and his dad, and the only thing we got was that he didn’t want to be an explorer. That’s fine, but we only know this because of an argument at the very start of the movie and then the dad leaves and that’s legit the only thing we know about their relationship. However the movie acts like we know their relationship and that there was more to it than just that one instance we seen. Are we meant to believe he was a bad dad because he took his kid exploring? Or are we meant to think he’s bad because Searcher himself never wanted to explore.
Throughout the movie, we are meant to believe that the dads passion for exploring is a bad thing. And sure he left his kid for it(i think searcher was an adult at that time so it’s not like he left when he was a child), but the dad is the only one whose painted in a bad light for having that passion. The movie never once brings up the fact that it was exploring that made searcher find the pando, or that it’s exploring that led him to the strange world. Searcher doesn’t realize any of this nor does he come to appreciate it, Searcher constantly talks bad about the skills his father had, even though those skills are what saved him. Do we see Searcher appreciating his father and the skills he was taught? No. instead searcher never comes to realize that his father taught him things that are useful and that exploring is a good thing because you discover things that can be helpful.
Which brings me to the end when they go to the other side of the mountain. Throughout the movie, Searcher never comes to accept his fathers passion for exploring. He never once compliments his dad or the idea or anything. So the idea that searcher would care about about his father seeing the other side, comes out of nowhere. Searcher doesn’t care about his fathers passion or his fathers legacy. We know he doesn’t. He never comes to care or appreciate it, so why did the movie do it when there was no build up to it. The father shouldn’t have cared, because he had to realize that Searcher was more important. So why did they bring the father out when he got over it and the entire movie was saying that the father is a bad person for caring and wants us to side with searcher who never cared or appreciated it?
Which goes to Ethan. This was another relationship conflict that wasn’t built up. The only instances where you can say it was built up, was Ethan getting the explorer card and wanting to go on the expedition. But besides that, the conflict between him and Searcher came off incredibly forced and out of nowhere. Sure he enjoyed exploring and wanted to know more about his grandfather, but nothing indicated that it was something he so strongly wanted to do.
There’s also the ending and finding the other side that had no payoff whatsoever and you can cut it out of the movie and lose nothing because nothing came from it. I mean, it was a twist I guess, but it was a lackluster twist.

Trailer Oficial: Strange World
Menudo trailer es que nos regala Disney con la cinta Strange World, y es que visualmente es una pasada, nos recordó un “mucho” a Los Croods, donde el diseño de arte se luce a más no poder. (more…)
