Stranger's Goodbye Part Two
Part One Here
Listen to This
His thoughts wandered as he pursued her, what was he going to say to her when he finally caught up? What if she turned him down? He was pulled out of his thoughts though when he noticed an ominous looking man headed towards her. He narrowed his eyes as the hooded man approached her, a jolt of shock pulsing through his body when the man grabbed her arm. She attempted to shrug him off but the man just held on tighter. He watched in confusion at the people continuing to pass by, seemingly ignorant to what was happening. He yelled hoping he could scare the man but his voice was drowned out by the sound of the traffic. Suddenly everything was moving too slowly, as if everything was determined to prevent him from getting to her. He watched in horror as the hooded man pulled her into the alley, he called out for someone to help her but over the sounds of the city no one heard or, perhaps, cared to hear.
He stood helplessly on the curb forced to wait for the cars passing by. Anger boiled inside him why was no one helping her?! After what seemed an eternity there was a break in the traffic and he sprinted across the street. As he reached the other side a gun shot rang out the sound echoing against the buildings, and his heart stopped. No! He pushed his way through the now panicking people desperately trying to reach the ally. To reach Her. His heart was beating faster than he ever remembered it beating before. With one final shove he was there, he spotted the hooded man running down the alley a purse swinging in his hand. And there was the girl slumped against the wall her hand clutching her side.
He ran to her catching her as she collapsed. He held her gingerly in his arms taking in her now pale and tear streaked face. She looked up at him, silently lifting her hand showing it stained with blood. His eyes widen at the sight of it his heart now full of panic; he called back toward the street for someone to help looking back at her to see a smile on her lips. HOW COULD SHE SMILE RIGHT NOW?
“Hello” she said softly, “Hi” he answered a little breathless and very confused. "Were you following me?" she asked, her voice just a whisper, "Erm…I- maybe a little" he answered sheepishly. "I saw you at the cafe, I'm Emilie" "Liam" he answered attempting to smile back. “You've been there a lot lately” she said her eyes never leaving his; he wondered at their color: and icy clear blue. It took him a minute to remember she had asked a question, “Ya” he finally answered lamely. Were they really having this conversation? He thought to himself. He faintly heard the sirens and breathed a small sigh of relief, but Emilie had gone quiet her breath starting to become shallower, the pain now evident on her face. He held her tighter not knowing how else to help silently praying the ambulance would get there soon.
They stared at each other for a moment and he reached down gently brushing the hair from her face, her skin feeling cold even to his numbed fingertips. She weakly smiled at him again and it was obvious it took a lot of effort. She moved her hand to rest on his he grasped it tightly. Her eyes began to droop and he felt the sting of tears in his own, “It’s going to be ok, you’re going to be fine” he repeated over and over.
She gave his hand a light squeeze shaking her head ever so slightly. "You should have followed me sooner" she said in a barely audible whisper her eyes fluttering closed her hand slipping from his, “No! Oh god no! Please hold on! Please!” The tears began to fall freely from his eyes stinging his skin as he pulled her closer. He leaned down and rested his forehead against hers; “Good bye” he whispered, softly kissing her cold lips the tears falling from his face to hers.
Then there were hands on his shoulders, unfamiliar blurry faces, questions so many questions, and she was pulled away from him. He stood there frozen, not even bothering to wipe away the tears still falling from his eyes while he watched them try to bring her back, but he knew it was no use. He couldn’t explain it but he knew she was gone.

There had been so many people to answer to: the paramedics, the police, and his management. He hadn’t had time to even think about it all, until now. Alone in the dark of his bedroom, everything finally sunk in and he felt it. He felt the crushing pain of losing her. All he knew was her name and yet his heart was ripped in two. He shouldn't feel this way he knew, but he also knew deep down that he loved her; he had fallen in love from afar without even knowing her name.
But now she was gone. He would never know what could have happened if they had been given the chance….if he had only said something sooner. He soon drifted to sleep, the exhaustion of the day enough to overcome his churning mind and aching heart. His dreams were an echo of the morning only this time he made it to her before she got hurt, this time he didn’t have to say ‘Good Bye’.
