A quick note on art and its importance.

This past week has been one of the best I’ve had in a long, long time (possibly ever?). From Thursday to Saturday was the run of my very first official college show, 12 Angry Men. Not only did I love the director and her vision, as well as everything we did with the show (a modernization but really a creation of timelessness that involved erasing gender and race for a sense of humanity), but I also got really close with the cast. Some of them I knew and was already good friends with, but others I didn’t. I am so happy to say I have 12 friends and fellow artists now that I am so thankful to have worked with and created art with. We spent about two months together working on this project, and by the end, I was just so grateful and overwhelmed by how blessed I felt by the sheer talent of these people I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with. We had a cast party and for once I was just happy and thankful to be with people I cared about and respected. There was no thought of romance or being alone, I was just with these people I felt so close to - this is a HUGE deal for me. I was also overwhelmed by the support I received for the show, the people who came out to see it and share love with me. Andi and her mom came and then took me out to dinner and it was just so, so wonderful.

I was sad to see the show finish, but in the back of my mind, I knew it wasn’t over yet. Sure enough, yesterday, the head of my studio gathered the cast together and told us the show had been chosen for an all-studio festival in the spring. We will be doing 12 Angry Men again in April, in front of all of the other drama studios at school, as well as agents, casting directors, department heads, etc! At this news, we cried and screamed and hugged each other. I got that feeling of community that made me want to be an actor in the first place - seeing a cast love on each other and become a family. It felt like a reunion of the cast of a beloved television series. I am so incredibly in awe of the fact that I get to continue this incredible project with these incredible people.

And so I’m feeling really good about my art and my career as an artist. It’s hard, but it’s experiences like this that make it worth it. I am so incredibly blessed to be able to make a career out of what I love and to be able to throw myself so fully into my art. I am so happy.
