Stray Kat Gallery Review: Zane Fix and Stella Michaels Highline Balancing Act
I attended the Stray Kat Gallery on Thursday September 18th, located on 10th avenue and 15th street. The gallery featured artists Zane Fix and Stella Michaels. The show can be described as a combination of Japanese pop art (FIX) and abstract expressionism(Michaels). Zane fix artworks was created using vibrant colors, and he is often inspired by pop culture idols such as audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and David Bowie. While Stella Michaels is a New York City, Chelsea based artist, her art can only be found in the chelsea market. Her works are inspired by NYC, which she describes as her city. The city that has many cultures, and is so vibrant and full of life; that is the only place she feels comfortable displaying and selling her art.
The Stray Kat gallery is a unique space, that is some what industrial by nature. The floors were concrete and the ceiling had exposed pipe which set the minimalist nature for the display of both the vibrant and expressive art. The setup allowed the art to shine. A nice touch was that the gallery had hung some japans umbrellas on the ceiling to add to the japans ambiance.
New York State of Mind (Enamel on Canvas) 2014
Most of the art works were framed and hung across the walls of the gallery, however some pieces were selected to be hung together in collections. I think it’s important for an artist to create collection. For an artist to display their work in that manner shows the relationship between their multitude of works and brings meaning to the pieces as part of a greater whole.
Pop Art Collection by Zane Fix
There was one piece by Stella Michael called Shooting Star at Midnight (Acrylic on Canvas), which i found to be extremely intriguing. Stella used very few colors and made an abstract sketch of what appears to be the city skyline on a blue back ground with one red circle lying on top of the painting. The piece i pretty minimalistic in nature, yet it feels warm and mysterious. The work also happened to have matched my outfit which was a happy coincidence.

I really enjoyed Zane’s modern twist on Andy Warhol like pop art, I’m the kind of person that enjoys bright and exciting colors in my art. Plus I like that most of his work were sketches with pops of color.
