The Tablet Explosion To Come

It has been a busy year already in the world of tablet news. Thanks to the iPad, tablets are not just for tech geeks anymore. Forrester goes as far as saying that by 2015, tablets will outsell traditional laptops. But you don’t need to wait four years to see this evolution occur; large online retailers are seeing half of their mobile commerce coming from a tablet device. Though the iPad made the tablet hip and relevant, it is not the only player in the game. Here is a quick rundown of everything you need to know about the emerging tablet market that is sure to explode soon:

The iPad 2 is in production. It is rumored to have a faster processor, higher resolution display and a front-facing camera for video chat.

Google’s Honeycomb is available. This new mobile version of Google’s operating system is specifically designed for tablets. There will not be a “Honeycomb Tablet,” but many forthcoming devices will run Honeycomb, the same as a wide range of smart phones runs the Android mobile OS.

There are tablets currently running Android 2.2. While the first tablet running Honeycomb is not out yet, tablets are running the older version of the Android OS. The low-coast Streak 7 from Dell is an example, but the experience is a bit underwhelming, as Walt Mossberg wrote yesterday.

The latest is the HP Touchpad. It already is drawing comparisons to the iPad, and it is going to feature Skype and a Kindle application and will run its own “HP webOS”

iPad 3? And if you need any further proof that tablet mania is upon us, the iPad 2 doesn’t even have a release date or pricing yet, but iPad 3 rumors are circulating.

The best part about the tablet space is that nobody really knows who this year’s big winners will be. Almost every blog post I read ends with something like, “It’s going to be a crazy summer.” Many consumers are already brand activists in the Android or Apple camps due to their love for their current phones, and that allegiance likely will transfer to their tablet purchases. But plenty of market share is up for grabs, and it will be a battle of both the device and the content and applications available on each platform.

Priced at $200 with T-Mobile service agreement, the Dell Streak 7 is a powerhouse tablet that features a 1GHz dual-core Tegra T20 processor, 5.0-megapixel camera, and 7-inch touchscreen display.

On one of the first Tegra 2 devices to market:

Sadly, that good performance news turns quite sour when it comes to battery life. There's no way to beat around the bush on this one: the Streak 7's battery life seriously disappoints. In our past few days of usage, the most we've been able to squeeze out of it was about six hours of juice.

The Tegra 2 chipset brings a lot to the table, but I've been incredibly concerned about battery life. Let's hope the Streak 7's performance isn't indicative of all Tegra 2 devices.
