We were so lucky to see this beautiful performance in the streets of Milan. Unfortunately I can not remember the name of performer. . . #street #milan #streetart #streetperformance #streetperformances #igersmilano #ig_milano #ilikeitaly #igersitalia (at Milan, Italy)
Photo: I saw some awesome Break-dancers, as well as other street performers today at Mauerpark. (Click "Read more" for the rest of the pictures!)
Visiting Flohmarkt am Mauerpark (The flea market at Mauerpark) has been at the top of my list of things to do here in Berlin, and today I finally went there. It's just like every flea market I've ever been to, except completely different. It was so completely packed with people, that it was hard to even get to a stand to look at the knick-knacks they were selling. A lot of the stuff was really tacky, like any flea market, but there was also some really cool antiques, used books, and original art stands.
I ran into a stand selling real lithographs from the late 1800's and 1900's. There were maps, and strange medical diagrams, so I was naturally really into it. A lot of them depicted animals and plants, and I found these really beautiful. I bought a lithograph of mushrooms, that indicates which ones are edible and which ones are poisonous. Mushrooms are one of my favorite vegetables, and I think they look like cute little troll houses. Anyways, you never know when you are going to need to know about poisonous mushrooms.
At a used book stand, I got Dubliners by James Joyce in German, because I thought "Why not?" I asked the bookseller if he read Joyce in German and he said he did, but not in English so he wouldn't be able to compare. He told me that Finnegans Wake has actually been translated into German, by this really ambitious dude. He also noted though, that Finnegans Wake really is not "translateable", because it is so impossible to understand in the first place. He said that Dubliners is one of Joyce's least experimental works, and therefore makes for a readable and for the most part enjoyable translation.
I wished I asked him his favorite book that was originally in English, because that would have been cool to know. I am interested in exploring translations, and seeing how reading in a different language shapes the reading experience or how one sees a work of literature. That bookseller seemed like a really interesting guy, he gave out a little paper with a quote on it to every customer. Mine said:
"Jedes Wahre vorwärts ist letztlich immer ein Zurück zur Liebe." - Konrad Hansen
"Every truth forward is ultimately always a return to love" - Konrad Hansen
I think it means, those who have moved you in the past will affect you forever. As you move on in your life, you will always remember how you have loved, and that will shape your perspective in the future. We are always connected to each other, and we can never forget.
The park was filled and surrounded by street performers, which I want to show you through the pictures I took of them...
These break-dancers drew in a square for them to dance in on the sidewalk, and a crowd surrounded to witness their awesome moves.
This guy playing Daft Punk covers with his pants (apparently purposefully) at his ankles. Oh ya, and a horse mask.
This is an indie band from New Zealand called Charity Children. They seemed really well put-together, because they not only sounded great, but also had promotional material and an album for sale. I actually took a video, which I will upload to Youtube and share later, so you can check them out.
Imagine this: German funk music...
And of course a graffiti artist. He was doing his work out in the daylight, because that wall is basically delegated for public art, so it was entirely acceptable.
This juggler performed his show in a big open semi-circular theater. A huge crowd sat in the seats to watch.
These guys played some catchy originals, they sounded like they were from America. Seems like quite a few street performance groups travel to live in Berlin, because it is a city that fosters and appreciates the arts.
And these guys were playing the what-chu-ma-call-its. Whatever they are, they make really beautiful droning sounds along with simultaneous plucked melodies.
