Some illustrations of Streltsy(Shooters) I retouched to feature the colours and coat of arms I designed for House Vojvodin, the ruling family of The Tsardom of Rus’skaya. These illustrations are for a low-fantasy setting of my design with technology equivalent to the late medieval and renaissance periods, where formations of heavily armoured and mounted knights fight alongside armies of pikemen and matchlock musketeers, where medieval-style stone castles are gradually being outsourced in favour of both lavish country estates and devoted military fortifications due to the advancements made in artillery technology, and where rising nation-states in the form of Kingdoms and Empires look beyond the boundaries of the known world in search of greater wealth and territory. In context to the lore of my fantasy setting, House Vojvodin is the ruling family of The Tsardom of Rus’skaya, or my fantasy setting’s rough equivalent to The Tsardom and Empire of Russia during the Tsarist Period. (1547-1917)

Donkey walk in 1654. 

From the album of baron Meyerberg, Austrian ambassador to Russia.

The donkey walk was a ritual symbolized Christ's entry into Jerusalem. The patriarch represented Christ sitting on the horse and the tsar (Alexei Mikhailovich) led it on foot into the Kremlin. Kneeling people are streltsy according to Meyerberg's picture. 

This tradition rooted in Ivan the Terrible's reign was abolished by Peter I.

Segei Ivanov - Strelets

Strelets were first regular infantry troops. They formed one third of Russian army to the end of the XVII century. In peace time they engaged in trade and crafts. Because of that they drew together with common people and took part in different revolts in XVII century. Peter I liquidated these troops after their support of Tsarevna Sophia's claim to the Russian throne.

Streltsy were the first standing force in Russia created by Ivan IV (The Terrible). This infantry units were armed with firearms. This military reform was ahead of that of Maurice of Orange.
