This multimodal text was created by the secondary students at Yarraville Special Developmental School in collaboration with the Photography Electives Group.
The text is multimodal as it combines film, text, spacial elements, music, animations, student artwork, gestural elements, sound effects and dialogue to create a short film, which brings Aaron’s imagination to life.
I chose this text because it truly embodies the essence of multimodality. Although this production is quite professional, teachers can use similar activities in their everyday classroom.
In the credits of the film, it is shown that class members had different roles in creating the text, such as painting props and backgrounds, voicing and drawing characters, acting, editing, song writing, song performing, recording/filming and so on. The possibilities are endless.
I would use this exact activity in my classroom, as detailed in the lesson plans for my assignment. Giving each child an empowering role is a strengths-based approach and improves the likelihood that the students will be engaged and achieve success. I would present the final product to the school community, making sure the students are proud of their hard work.
