Headcanon

Kevin was given his Strexpet after having lost something important, either a real pet, a loved one, or the battle for Desert Bluffs. This is why (as well as the fact I don't think he sees it as having feelings and being an actual creature), even though he is not exactly a violent person (unless he wants blood/decorations) he willingly abused this creature thing. Lauren was the one who gave it to him.
