Well, Pete thought. Here goes nothing. “Perry Mason?”

Even Perry’s hair looked annoyed. He slumped back into his seat and rolled his eyes, but he didn’t look Pete’s way, not even when he picked up his glass of water and bit out through a scowl, “Jesus Christ, yes, what?”

Pete’s eyebrows jumped up, and he folded his arms over his chest. “I’m Pete Strickland.”

That got the son of a bitch’s attention. His head snapped up just as he swallowed, and the second he lay eyes on Pete—a moment that Pete was going to remember from now to his casket—he choked and did an honest to Christ spit take, spewing water all over himself and the table. 

“Good to meet you too,” Pete said.
