Story - summarized
Little Princess Ophelia is on her way to her music lesson when she hears an accordion in the garden. The musician’s daughter is practicing it, and Ophelia likes the melody. But the maids nudge her to her lesson instead of letting her listen for a minute. Before she leaves, she asks the girl to see her after her lesson.
Afterward, the two girls meet in the garden. They want to be friends and hang out, but Ophelia has never had any fun time... or free time, for that matter. The girl tells her about her hometown of Apple Town and how there is a legendary butterfly that glows in the dark.
The girls decide to climb onto a wall to better see the stars - a guard catches them before they can, and the girls get into trouble. But that doesn’t damper their spirits.
One day, the Apple girl gives Ophelia a box. Inside is the legendary glowing butterfly. It was a gift from her father, and she chose to give it to the princess instead. She also says that her father said not to open the box, although he never explained why.
That night, Ophelia walks out into the garden and opens the box, setting the butterfly free. It reminds her of shooting stars. It is so beautiful to see. She leaves the butterfly out, not wanting to trap such a majestic creature.
But the butterfly is not native to Pigeon, and it starts to wilt the garden and hurt the animals. Ophelia’s tutors reprimand her again, and she has no choice but to cage the butterfly.
So the princess learns early on that not everyone can enjoy freedom. Some are bound by nature, and others (like her) by duty.
Connections
-While the two don’t have much in common or see each other often, Mercury and Ophelia both have their Reflections regarding their childhood narrated in third person.
-Ophelia loves music so much that all her Reflections so far - this one, First Light of Dawn, and Moonlight Song - all involve it.
-Apple Town (and all of the country of Apple) is still a colony under Pigeon Kingdom. They don’t gain their independence until Ophelia is an adult and her father is assassinated.
Minor Spoilers
-Since she knows what it’s like to be trapped and bound by laws and customs, Ophelia tells the Water Elf King that she is willing to release the Water Elves from their contract with the late Queen Brynhild. She wants to give them a chance to be free.
Fun Facts
-Butterflies are a common motif for Ophelia. Her main character artwork features her with a butterfly on her fingers.
-This is just a coincidence, but it’s cool that Ophelia has encountered two kinds of glowing butterflies: the Earthbound Starlight from this Reflection, and the fire butterflies from Hephaes in the Tides and Flames hell event.
I wasn't allowed to feel and express. Now the one that doesn't allow it is myself.
The hand that covers my mouth and the fingers who close around my wrist are my own.
I writhe against a binding that I didn't create but was infused deeply into my core.
Hate how some things don’t apply to you unless you’ve turned 18.. my birthday is in november..
Talking about curfews here, strict parent amirite?
Don’t get me wrong, I love how strict my mom sometimes is, I know it’s a good upbringing and all but sheesh, I can’t walk my friend half way home..
