One summer to help with school I was working an extra job at this outdoor bar. I usually worked nights because I had school and my other job during the day.
I was cleaning tables one night as everything was closing down. This large group of 20-somethings gets up to leave and I wander over with my bin, bag, and rags. Suddenly this very old, very large man yells:
“Hey! Did you leave her a tip?!”
The group kind of look around in confusion and the old man pointed at me.
“She’s probably working here to pay for school and you lot left a huge mess! You could help out by at least leaving a tip.”
They ignored him and left. I cleaned their table and as I went to collect the old man’s glasses he handed me $20. You know what people usually left me as a tip? Twenty-five cents. Sometimes if I was lucky I might get a loonie.
“You’ve been diligently working all night. You deserved this.”
I had tears in my eyes I was so touched. He didn’t have to stick up for me. He didn’t have to give me such a generous tip. He’d had maybe 2 beers and just hung out listening to the music all night.
I think that was the kindest and best experience I ever had working a service job. You don’t have to leave big tips, but man, that validation meant a lot.
