The strix is a bird of ill omen in Roman and Greek mythology. Depicted as birds with long, golden beaks, red wings and four black legs, they feed on human flesh and blood, particularly enjoying the blood of infants.

Stories of the strix spread from Ancient Rome and Greece to Medieval Europe. Many people believe that the legend is based on owls, particularly the Eurasian scops.
