Jack is one of those kids who’s like fairly popular but just because he’s a genuinely nice, funny person
He was also one of those freshmen who just? know everyone? and are friends with everyone?
So everyone at least knows his name
Davey is a year younger and is kind of the Classic Nerd
And Sarah is his twin, and she’s trans
Jack hates bullies. so much. he doesn’t get in trouble for fighting much in school (mostly because he’s smart enough to take it off campus) but when he does he’s fighting a bully
So when he’s a sophomore and he sees Oscar and Morris, who he already knows are bullies, picking on a freshman he gets mad
and then he gets closer and hears that they’re picking on her for being trans and he gets M A D
(Medda is also trans and Jack will fight literally anyone who says trans women aren’t women or trans men aren’t men)
And he just gets in between the Delanceys and the girl (Sarah obv) and lets her get away and then punches one in the face and kicks the other and then they’re fighting
and he gets a few day ISS and the principal says he could get in less trouble if he apologized for breaking Oscar’s nose and starting the fight but he refuses on principle
and he smiles at Sarah every time they pass each other in the hallway just to let her know he’s on her side but they don’t really know each other
but Sarah told her family about the boy who stood up for her and both Davey and Sarah know Jack’s name just because he’s that kind of person
so fast forward to the winter and Davey got suckered into helping with set for the musical because they desperately needed techies and he is bad at saying no when people ask for help
and he walks in on that first day he’s going and lo and behold there’s Jack! Sarah’s protector! covered in paint and laughing and singing along to Taylor Swift songs
and Davey is sort of already figuring out he’s gay? but it’s hard for him to reconcile himself with his faith, when for a long time he believed that he couldn’t be both religiously Jewish and gay
and even though he’s like, yeah, God still loves Sarah even though she’s trans and bi, he’s also like, but maybe it isn’t the same for me. maybe he won’t love me if I’m gay
but he sees Jack like that and his stomach drops in the “oh boy here comes a crush” way
and Jack recognizes him and sort of adopts him as his set crew son and by the end of that first day Davey is the one laughing and covered in paint and Jack is now a friend
they get along really well, because Jack is really smart just not necessarily in a way that gets him great grades, and Davey has a great sense of humor
Sarah also gets absorbed so they’re just three really good friends and they sit together at lunch and Sarah also joins set crew and it’s a grand old time
Jack is, of course, very bi and very much has a crush on Davey, but he’s also not very good at expressing it because when he thinks he’s being obvious, he isn’t, because his idea of flirting is putting his arm around their shoulders and being around them all the time but Jack is like that with everyone
Davey is coming to terms with himself and he comes out to Sarah first because they’re twins and best friends and Sarah is like, duh, and you like Jack
and then Davey comes out to Jack and Jack is like, nice time to ramp up the flirting
but he’s still just being his normal self and Davey is having a problem with that because he wants Jack to be flirting with him but Jack has never specifically said he liked boys and Jack is like this with everyone
but Jack is just trying really hard to be like hey Dave I’m gay for you without saying it in those words
and Sarah, poor Sarah, is too good a friend to tell either one that the other likes him, so she just deals with Davey moaning at home and Jack calling her at three am to cry and is like oh my god please just talk
finally over the summer Davey is sleeping over for a few days because Medda had to go out of town for the weekend and Jack finally just flat out says “Davey I want to kiss you” and after that they’re dating but only Sarah knows because Jack isn’t really out out, he’s just in that weird zone where people who know him well know he isn’t straight but don’t exactly know and Davey is only out to Sarah
but it’s really easy to hide, because Jack just acts like he’s dating everyone so Jack’s junior year and Davey’s sophomore nobody knows and Jack’s senior year they’re both just wanna kiss in the hallway and hold hands all the time but they also don’t feel quite ready to come out
and Jack finally is like “I know it’s dramatic and I know it’s also cliche but like...prom?”
so they decide to come out at Prom which leads to Davey coming out to his family and Jack officially coming out to Medda but let’s be real Medda has listened to many a three am rant from Jack’s room about sexuality
and yeah it’s just a good gay time
bonus points: Jack goes off to art school and Davey is jealous of this one boy he talks about all the time until Davey comes to visit and is like “oh. oh no. ohhhh noooo.” because he gets a crush and he tells Jack because they’re good at talking and Jack admits he likes the boy too and obviously the boy is Crutchie and eventually all three of them are dating each other and it’s good
