Product Review: Stroodies
One of the things you might learn quickly when getting your first reptile is that there aren’t many unique products out there for them in pet stores. Unless you’re going into full customization mode with a bioactive enclosure, the options are dominated by Exo Terra, Zoo Med, and other big name pet companies. I have nothing against these products and use some of them myself, but I like to have more creative freedom when it comes to setting up homes for my animals.
And it doesn’t get much better than Etsy when you’re seeking something unusual. Fortunately for my geckos, I found Stroodies. Stroodies makes unique, 3D-printed products that are both stylish and practical.
Wander, my first crested gecko, was a pet store purchase. I admit it was a spur-of-the-moment kind of decision. I was just looking to get some one-on-one interaction with a crestie, but I ended up falling in love with one particular gecko - Wander - and couldn’t leave her behind. So I bought everything I needed for her at the pet store that day, including some decorations that I soon ditched after realizing they were unsafe and/or just plain ugly.
That’s when I went online and found Stroodies. I was specifically looking for a better feeding ledge and hide than the hideous tree with a face in it that Exo Terra provided as an all-in-one solution. (Note: Don’t buy Exo Terra’s crested gecko starter kit. Just buy the Exo Terra glass enclosure by itself and populate it with better decorations!) To satisfy my need to customize, I’ve made three separate purchases from Stroodies since last April, including Bubble Lofts, feeding ledges, and food/water bowls.
All Stroodies products are available in plenty of colors (and new ones are always coming out); you can imagine my delight when it was time to pick out Wander’s colors. When I made my first order back in April, the color options were more limited, but what I love most about Stroodies is it’s an ever-growing endeavor. When customers asked for more naturalistic colors like browns and greens, Stroodies went above and beyond to meet the request. When customers sought stronger, more reliable holds than traditional suction cups, Stroodies released magnetic options.
Although the ledges are designed for meal time, and the Bubble Lofts are meant to sleep in, I’ve found that my geckos really just love to hang out on both. It’s good for crested geckos to have some horizontal surfaces where they can just relax. Stroodies products provide plenty of space for this. I like to place Bubble Lofts higher up in the enclosures; this allows my geckos to sit closer to the UV lighting if they choose. (See the gorgeous, fired-up Ico below!)
But wait, there’s more! Because they are plastic, all Stroodies stuff, including the magnetic ones, are super easy to clean. I especially love the food bowls for this reason, as I was previously using disposable condiment cups and creating a lot of waste. Now I have enough Stroodies bowls around that clean ones are always on hand for feeding time.
If you’re interested in checking out Stroodies, be aware that some geckos may take time to warm up to the Bubble Lofts. Both Wander and Ico were almost immediately sitting on them during the evening, but it took a few weeks before they started sleeping inside them during the day. My geckos like sleeping in them as is, but you can also put some soft moss inside the lofts to help boost humidity.
Other pets love Stroodies, too!
I have been using Stroodies dishes as water bowls for my tarantulas, and they look simply adorable in the enclosures! For my arboreal tarantulas, I’ve also incorporated the feeding ledges to make elevated water dishes. Oh, and the suction cup Bubble Lofts work wonderfully as aquatic hides, too; my betta fish loves his! I guarantee you’ll find a use for Stroodies stuff no matter what type of small pet you have!
*Note: This is not a paid review. These are simply my honest opinions about these products.
3D printed feeder tongs & egg hides (from Stroodies on Etsy). If you need an arboreal hide for tree frogs / or a gecko, these things are great! I want one in every color 😍
