My pics will show that I cover all my flowerbeds in a thick layer of mulch called Strulch. It’s mineralised straw. (I don’t know what mineralised means either.) It traps in moisture, makes the soil easier to work, more crumbly, less crusty, and suppresses weeds. It is supposed to repel my arch enemies slugs and snails, but I have not seen any evidence of that. I can’t imagine gardening without it now. I barely have any weeds in my garden though and those I do have are easy to remove. I use Strulch because it is acid, and I have alkaline soil - the gardener is always trying to get to pH neutral. If you have acid soil, you could use mushroom compost instead, which is much cheaper. I buy Strulch by the pallet load every couple of years, but you can buy it from fancy-pants garden centres like Wisley and Burford. I confess it was not especially labour saving when I had my old dog, as she used to make a nest in it so the stuff stuck to her fur, and dropped all over the house.Â
