STS-51-L mission: Space Shuttle Challenger exploded after liftoff, killing all seven astronauts on board on January 28, 1986.

January 28, 1986: 34 years ago today - Michael J. Smith, Francis “Dick” Scobee, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Christa McAuliffe, Gregory Jarvis, and Judith Resnick perish when their space shuttle, Challenger, broke apart 73 seconds after launch due to a failure of the O-ring seals that was not designed to handle unusually cold conditions, like it was that morning in Florida.

Thirty-two years ago, the 25th flight of the American Space Shuttle program (STS-51-L), and the tenth mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted-off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission ended in a catastrophic failure that claimed the lives of all seven crew members. Popular Doctor Who companion Ace (played by Sophie Aldred) routinely wore an homage to those seven explorers. The mission patch she prominently wears on the front of her jacket is from the STS-51-L mission.
