Perhaps Ahreum was simply too inexperienced and therefore romanticized this. But seeing the same person wearing the same ageless face for years...having the same aura that pulled her gaze to her whenever she was around...was this what her co-workers called...soulmate?
“You just know. When they’re there, you feel like everything melts and they’re the only one you can see clearly.”
“We’ll all be lucky if our soulmate finds us. Or the vice versa.”
“I-I think I found mine.”
Today was one of those days in which she wished she could catch a glimpse of her again. Through the many times she had seen her, Ahreum had simply let her walk by, too afraid. She was afraid that this humane concept was true. That it was something so powerful she will forget about the past and lose sight of her goal. It was why she had resisted for so long. But maybe, just maybe...next time she’ll strike a conversation. See if there was anything special and if not, be disappointed and move on.
“Do you guys want anything from the coffee shop? She asked the two nurses that were cleaning up the hospital beds. They looked at each other, discussing what they wanted, and turned back to Ahreum with a bright smile. She made sure to remember to get them some bagels or croissants to go with their coffee. She smiled and shrugged off her doctor’s gown, sifting through her backpack for her wallet before she walked out.
The day promised to be a good one, the sun high up and the air crisp.
