My choice would be someone who knows the business, loves the public, knows what ‘fiduciary responsibility’ means (look it up) but also appreciates different kinds of genius, abilities and talents. She was even open to my Instagram Takeover!⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Well guess what - Heather Robinson, the CEO of the library, is equal parts business administrator, community member, visionary and gifted artist. @stthomaspubliclibrary ⁣I love this author’s voice and this book about books has everything that makes for a good read …⁣ ⁣ * Lots of humour⁣ * A van ⁣ * Her Royal Highness The Queen⁣ * A happy ending (sort of) and⁣ * I love the title⁣ ⁣ I actually read most of this, out loud, on a road trip from Toronto to Provincetown (and back)⁣. ⁣ Alan has also written, adapted or starred in some of my favourite stories in print, on stage and in film; A Private Function, Prick Up Your Ears (Screenplay), Talking Heads (all of them!), The Lady in the Van, The Clothes They Stood Up In, The History Boys.⁣ ⁣ I must admit, I’m not a fan of large books (hard to hold, transport etc.) and I really like my small hardcover edition from 2007 with a gold embossed crown and eye glasses on the cover. Check the link in bio for more info. ⁣ ⁣ I get it – the British Monarchy isn’t perfect. But they surely know how to put on a show. ⁣ Written in 1962, Paul wouldn’t have known at the time the magnitude of the event, ushering in the UK’s longest-reigning British monarch.⁣ ⁣ As the pageantry unfolds, we realize that the Queen in her Carriage and the Guards on horseback are just the backdrop for a family vacation gone slightly off the rails.⁣ Working class folks, managing everyday life, and trying to witness a moment of history.⁣ ⁣ For me part of the charm lies in the “golden era” feel of 1950’s Britain but, as Paul’s works were written in the time period they take place, the story is crafted so well that it feels timeless.⁣ ⁣ It does capture a moment in time when a nation joined in celebration and hope. Without water, there would be no trees to sustain us!⁣ ⁣ ⁣ What a concept … having a meeting with a tree. And with Thomas Pakenham, historian and arborist, as our guide you can imagine it will be an insightful journey. ⁣ The trees in his books are mythical, sacred, beautiful and scarred. Witnesses to history.⁣ An elephant or a macaw might live 80 years, turtles 100 and some whales and sharks up to 200. We are among living trees dating hundreds of years old, possibly 500 years plus.⁣ ⁣ The trees in my neighbourhood growing up seemed ancient when I passed through them daily on my way to and from school. I felt somewhat protected by them and watched as they weathered terrific storms and swayed gently in the summer. As a solitary child, these trees heard all my angst and hopes.⁣ ⁣ Their deep roots keep them grounded and nourished, allowing the upper branches to bend in the wind and to reach for the light and I think I decided early-on to live my life as a tree would.
