Alluvial Gold is a sonic tapestry weaving together percussion, sculptural instruments created specifically for the piece, live electronic processing and field recordings from Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) in Perth, Australia. Percussionist Louise Devenish and composer Stuart James in collaboration with visual artist Erin Coates reflect on the impact of industrialization on the river systems of Australia and the audible by-products of its living ecology. In particular, they focus on the dredging of native shellfish reefs in Australian rivers which were ground up for mortar, roads and building materials as well as pollution by heavy metals which have irreversibly impacted the estuarine ecologies. Devenish creates mutable textural scrims utilizing vibraphone, bass drum, small percussion instruments and amplified sculptural percussion including bronze casts of lead-damaged dolphin bones and circles of oyster shell “curtains.” James’ contribution is integral to the recording plying processing of Devenish’s percussion along with hydrophone river recordings, creating a lushly layered soundscape.

The piece begins with the spare sound of an oyster shell delicately splashing in a bowl of water, filtered and interlaced into delicate, pinging spatters. Sounds slowly accrue as low rumbles, hissing textures and pinpoint metallic clangs are integrated into the mix. Dervish introduces resonating vibraphone motifs as low undercurrents of river recordings, with ripples of moving water build density and velocity. It is striking at how effectively Devenish’s percussion, the electronics, and the field recordings are melded into an enveloping whole. The music patiently ebbs and flows as thundering cascades, slowly oscillating tones, chiming percussion, James’s treatments of the percussionist’s playing and the pops and rustles of the hydrophone recordings move in and out of focus.

Movement titles like “Confluence,” “Alluvial Fans and Meanders,” “Crystalline Water in the Mouth of the River” or “Death in the Mouth of the River” connote the impetus of the composition, but these sinuously segue into each other, creating a through-trajectory rather than episodic segments. In the penultimate movement “The Place of the Eagle,” the piece develops a lush, elegiac intensity with striations of tolling resonance that mount with resolute attention to the underlying components. This is amplified in the final movement, “Engulfment — Emancipation” which crescendos with discordant groans, bristling clinks and crackles, sizzles, and labyrinthine percussion swelling into a potent wall of sound which ends abruptly, laying bare the shadowy decay of Dervish’s metallophone. In performance, Coates’ video projections, captured during her free dives in the river add yet another layer. This is a commanding exploration of the sonic world of the complex ecology of river systems, their delicate balance and the destabilizing impact industrialization continues to have.
